In the latest vaccine update published by the Superior Council of Infectious Diseases (CSMI), there should be a gap of 8-12 weeks between the first and second doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine.

This follows new data on the vaccine efficacy, referring to a study which can be found here, which states that prolonging the interval between doses will have a favourable effect on the vaccine’s efficacy against symptomatic forms of the disease. However, the CSMI warned against administering the second dose beyond the twelfth week.

Experts around the globe say this could offer more flexibility to vaccine strategies, allowing for an increase in the number of vaccinations.

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Gérard Schockmel appealed for an extended interval between doses a week ago on the RTL-Podcast Wëllebriecher.

The opinion of the CSMI can be consulted here.
