Motorists under the influence of alcohol, fireworks, late night noise: Luxembourg's police officers were kept busy last night.

The Grand Ducal Police were out in force on New Year’s eve and carried out checks between 9pm and 6am.

Several permits were withdrawn and many people were fined and/or dished verbal warnings for failing to comply with the curfew.

A party was interrupted in Bertrange when officers intervened after receiving complaints of late-night disturbance. On arriving at the location they found that there were far too many people gathered in the apartment. Fines were written up for failure to comply with the restrictions in place.

The Grand Ducal Police have said that a total of 35 interventions took place on NYE, mostly following complaints of night-time disturbances or that fireworks were being let off.

Three driving permits were also withdrawn between overnight. The first in Steinsel after a motorist came off the road and crashed into a tree.

After being administered with a blood-alcohol test, the police, it was clear he was under the influence of alcohol.

Another permit was withdrawn during a Covid check in Rambrouch shortly before 1 am.

One person lost his licence after being checked in Mersch at around 3 am.

The icing on the cake however, came when police had to intervene at a hotel in Niederanven.

After being tipped off regarding suspicious smells coming out of some rooms, five individuals were arrested after drugs and paraphernalia were found during a search.
