Lack of specialised medical staffAssociation of Luxembourg Medical Students rings the alarm bells

The Covid crisis has shown that there is a lack of specialised medical staff in the Grand Duchy. The results of a new survey give further cause for concern.

The Luxembourg Association of Medical Students (ALEM) has carried out a survey on medical training in Luxembourg.

It shows that during the course of a university degree, the willingness to return to the Grand Duchy gradually decreases.

While 95.5% of first- and second-year medical students say they are willing to return to Luxembourg, only 76.4% say they are ready to return in the last two years of their studies.

Based on these results, it can be assumed that 30% of medical students will not return to Luxembourg after their studies to work as a doctor.

In response, ALEM presented a series of demands: the creation of a medical faculty with a complete curriculum in Luxembourg; the further development of training in medical specialisations; the creation of a university hospital in the Grand Duchy; and, ensuring that Luxembourg’s healthcare system keeps up to date with the latest innovations and high-quality treatments.
