American e-commerce giant Amazon has long been a champion of the extended shopping weekend, with the retailer almost becoming synonymous with lightning deals and discounts.

On Friday afternoon, a group of around 30 people gathered outside the Kirchberg headquarters to protest against Black Friday, citing the company’s working conditions, environmental impact and tax avoidance as the reasons fuelling the demonstration.

The demonstrators said they were protesting the drive towards consumerism, and said customers should look to local businesses for their shopping.

Amazon reacted in defence against the protest, stating the company was a front-runner in the fight against climate change and had a goal of carbon neutrality by 2040. Over the last few years, Amazon said they had paid billions in taxes worldwide.
