Motorists travelling towards Luxembourg City from France or the Dudelange area on Friday morning are encountering significant traffic jams, with congestion on the A3 motorway stretching back several kilometres, well beyond the French border.
The delays began before 6am, when two right-hand lanes of the A3 were closed between the Berchem service area and the Croix de Cessange due to urgent roadworks.
Live traffic maps show the entire affected area marked in deep red, indicating severe disruption.
Authorities from Luxembourg's Motorway Traffic Control Centre (CITA) explained that maintenance crews were carrying out emergency resurfacing works on the rightmost lane, which is normally reserved for buses.
These works had not been scheduled in advance but were deemed necessary and launched at short notice.
Officials stated that as soon as the repairs were completed, the second right-hand lane would reopen, but the outermost lane would remain closed to traffic.
Police reported around 7am that an accident had also occurred in the area, involving two cars colliding just after the Berchem service station. However, no injuries were reported.
