
Link was nominated for the position by the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA) and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). He will continue to conduct his role at LSA while performing his duties as Interim Director.
The European Space Resources Innovation Centre was launched in August 2020 as a joint venture by the LSA and LIST. It will be joined by the European Space Agency (ESA) as a strategic partner by the end of the year. Link will lead development and early activities, including the search for a full-time ESRIC director.
Link is a well-respected expert in the field of space resources, and has been responsible for coordinating the SpaceResources.lu initiative since its launch in 2016. Before joining LSA, he held similar positions within the Ministry of the Economy and Luxinnovation. For more than ten years, Mathias Link has represented Luxembourg in the space-related committees of the European Union and ESA, as well as the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). He was also a member of The Hague Working Group on the Governance of International Space Resources.
Prior to joining the public sector, Link worked at management consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton, Siemens Corporate Technology in Munich and Philips research labs in Eindhoven. He holds a doctorate in applied physics from the University of Lorraine in France, and a master’s degree in micro-technical engineering from the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne, Switzerland.
