In 2018, a total of 4,108 people died in Luxembourg, 29 less than in 2017. Among these cases, 2,043 were women compared to 2,065 men. While these figures suggest a certain balance, the men died younger than the women.

On average, 11 people died per day, resulting in 78 deaths per week, and 342 per month. The highest number of deaths was recorded in February (428), while the lowest number was recorded in June (291).

93.4% of those affected were ill, while 6.6% are referred to as “external causes”.

Over half of the deaths were reported in hospitals, compared to a quarter in nursery homes and 17% at home.

The main causes of death remain cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
