The new prison will enable the country to comply with international penitentiary standards which stipulate that there should be two different structures for incarceration and pre-trial detention respectively.
497 people are currently incarcerated in Schrassig, including 268 prisoners serving their sentences and 229 people in pre-trial detention. The needs of the two prison populations are very different. Convicts for instance need to be prepared for social reintegration after prison through training or a job in the prison workshop, whereas remand prisoners are more in need of advice and social assistance. They will also have to learn one of the official languages of Luxembourg.
In order to better deal with both groups of prisoners, men in pre-trial detention will be transferred to the Uerschterhaff prison in Sanem at the end of 2022.
The facility in Schrassig can then be gradually renovated and upgraded to meet today's needs. An improvement in penal treatment is also planned.
