The Tageblatt announced the news on Friday, stating the board of directors already had three potential successors in mind. The administrative board is expected to vote on the candidates on Monday.
Hansjörg Reimer, who was appointed general director in 2018, has been subjected to fierce criticism in recent months, notably for a lack of leadership.
When asked for comment, Esch-sur-Alzette mayor Georges Mischo maintained the Tageblatt article relied on speculation.
According to RTL sources, Reimer is expected to resign from his post by mutual agreement on 1 September and will remain on CHEM staff as a doctor. A successor will be named in due course.
