According to Prof Claude P. Muller from the Luxembourg Institute of Health, Covid-19 figures will continue to rise if we continue on without new measures.
Professor Muller stated that the government has now also confirmed that we are experiencing a second wave and that the main reason for this was a combination of private events and gatherings in front of cafés and restaurants. This situation, Muller stressed, calls for a number of restrictions. According to the virologist, measures in the Horesca sector as well as the number of guests people are allowed to invite home have to be reconsidered.
"20 people in one place, even with face masks, is too many": Prof Muller
The professor also warned that people probably will have to live for a long time with face masks, at least until some sort of herd immunity has been reached or an effective vaccine against SARS-COV-2 becomes available. However, Muller also pointed out that it will take months before a vaccine could be used in the Grand-Duchy.
Muller approves of the government's decision to publish the number of infections per canton. The virologist thinks that these maps show in which regions people had to be especially careful. He also considers it a positive side effect, if municipalities start "competing" for the lowest numbers of infections because it could lead to more measures being taken in the fight against the virus.
Professor Muller added that a coronavirus app could be an additional help for tracing efforts. However, Muller thinks that the app should have been introduced at the beginning of the lockdown to allow people to get used to how it works. This in turn would have made it more effective in the current situation, now that tracing has once again become more difficult.
