Luxembourg currently holds an ambivalent status in Europe. On the one hand, it is being blacklisted by several member states over virus concerns. On the other hand, the country is being praised for its handling of the crisis and willingness to lend a helping hand to other countries.
This is for instance the case in France, which celebrates its Bastille Day on 14 July. It is in this context that French president Emmanuel Macron hopes to express his gratitude to the Grand Duchy. As a reminder, Luxembourg took in 11 critically ill patients from the Grand Est region during the peak of the pandemic. This year’s ceremonies will pay tribute to the invaluable efforts of medical staff and all other actors that continue to fight the virus.
After the ceremony, Luxembourg’s Minister of Health Paulette Lenert will have lunch with France’s Minister for Solidarity and Health Olivier Véran as well as their German, Austrian, and Swiss counterparts.
