Although this year's editions of the Rock-um-Knuedler, the Schueberfouer, and the Blues and Jazz Rallye all had to be cancelled, the capital still has compiled an event schedule for the summer months.
Everything is being done to avoid a further spreading of the coronavirus, which is why a majority of the city's traditional annual events had to be cancelled. The municipality is nonetheless adamant about offering an alternative program for the period from 11 July to 13 September.
An official press statement notes: "We are determined to help revive the city's streets again, while avoiding gatherings of larger crowds."
The first notable gesture: all of the city's attraction rides for children will be free everyday from 11 am to 10 pm.
Carousel
An attraction ride will be contructed on Kinnekswiss. The carrousel will be 50 meters in height and have 36 chariots in total. Furthermore, a lounge and a snack bar will be installed alongside.
The ride will operate daily from 11 am to 10 pm.
City districts
Several entertainment events have been planned across the city's squares and parks in an effort of urban revitalisation.
72 applications have been accepted by the city, which will be distributed on 16 different locations:
- Place Jeanne d’Arc (Bonnevoie)
- Parc Laval (Dommeldange / Eich / Pfaffenthal / Weimerskirch)
- Parc de Merl (Hollerich)
- Place de Roedgen (Cessange)
- Rue de Strasbourg (Gare)
- Place Thorn (Merl)
- Place Auguste Laurent (Limpertsberg)
The spaces will remain accessible to the public throughout.
Theatre beach
After last year's success, the city will once more install a beach at the Place due Théâtre if sanitary restrictions allow for the initiative.
350 square-meters will be covered with sand alongside the installation of sunshades, a piano, and an area for pétanque. Naturally, snacks and drinks will not be missing.
Streets and Squares
Several other attractions will be installed throughout the city. A food market with seating area will be organised at place de la Constitution, lasting the entire period from 18 July to 13 September.
Further events will be held at the following sites:
- Parc Villa Vauban
- Croisement Grand-Rue, rue Aldringen
- Piquet (rue de la Poste)
- Roude Pëtz (Grand-Rue)
- Square Jan Palach
Glacis
Since no Schueberfouer can be held this year, the Glacis will be able to host other smaller events.
For the first time, a drive-in cinema will be constructed on the municipal parking, a long-standing tradition that originated in the US during the 1930s.
The screen will be 24 x 12 m, making it possible for 130 cars in total to have a clear view. Alongside will be a drive-in food village to complete the full experience of going to the movies.
Screening will vary between old classics and recent productions. The full schedule, as well as security regulations, can be found on the following website.
