Minister for the EnvironmentNot a communication problem, but a lack of transparency on the Belgian side: Dieschbourg

RTL Today
The Minister for the Environment, Carole Dieschbourg, was a guest on RTL Radio on Wednesday morning.

During an interview on RTL Radio on Wednesday morning, Carole Dieschbourg stated that the crisis has demonstrated that we are supportive, capable of acting, and able to deal with the crisis. If Luxembourg’s citizens want to be better prepared for any future crisis, we should start thinking about interdependent factors.

According to Dieschbourg, this is also precisely why investments are necessary and why they should be substantial.

She went on to state that this may also have been the chance to build a more just and supportive society because people became more aware of what actually matters to them.

The minister pointed out that the government had already put a long-term climate and energy plan in place. This plan included a variety of measures which are expected to improve sustainability in the Grand-Duchy. Allowing employees to work from home was also definitely a part of this.

According to Dieschbourg, crisis could also be used as an incentive to more selectively invest in research and innovation.

In regard to the diplomatic incident with her Belgian counterpart two weeks ago, during which Belgian plans for nuclear waste disposal sites were leaked, Dieschbourg stated that she did not see the situation as a problem of communication. Instead she stressed that she just wanted to point out a lack of transparency on the Belgian side.

The fact that there was the possibility of waste being stored near the Luxembourgish border would have meant that the quality of our drinking water could have been at risk.

However, Dieschbourg confirmed that the dispute with her Belgian counterpart had been settled in the meantime.
