Panic buying at larger supermarkets had a drastic impact on the "Centbuttek" social stores: larger supermarkets reportedly no longer delivered the small social supermarket.

The three centbuttek located in Bettembourg, Beggen and Petange have closed. Since the start of the quarantine period nothing is being delivered anymore, says Arthur Besch of one of the stores in Bettembourg.

Centbuttek is a low-priced, social grocery store run by volunteers. It is supported by bakeries, supermarkets and small shops which provide surplus food that is perfectly fresh, but cannot be sold in regular supermarkets.

Due to excessive panic buying,  supermarkets ran out of surplus food to deliver to the stores. This is a hard hit especially for vulnerable members of society. These customers can now fall back on meal vouchers provided by the Social Welfare Office.
