Whereas many families rely on crèche or school canteens to provide their children with meals each day, the coronavirus measures will cause grocery bills to increase in attempts to feed the whole family.
In times of crisis such as these, social supermarkets have become crucial to those struggling to shop at normal supermarkets. Eight social supermarkets are run by the Luxembourg Red Cross, while Caritas manages four more. The shops are all supplied by the non-profit organisation Spënnchen, and other supermarkets across the country.
A social supermarket sells surplus products at discounted prices to those on low incomes, as well as offering social support and a sense of community for those in need.
