Employment980 job openings predicted for ICT sector in next two years

RTL Today
On Tuesday, Fedil, the Federation of Luxembourg Industrialists, and ABBL, the Association of Banks and Bankers, presented the results of a survey on the prospects of hiring in the ICT sector.

The information and communication technology sector is expected to hire nearly 1,000 new employees in the next two years, particularly highly qualified workers. As the trend is expected to continue, businesses are turning to schools and the government to adapt the curriculum in order to meet the industry's requirements.

Minister of Education Claude Meisch said education must adapt to a digital future to keep up with the current phase of technological transformation. Plans are afoot to increase the digital presence in schools, and to introduce more classes to teach students digital skills. Coding classes are set to roll out across the country from September onwards.

Meisch said the plan was to give every pupil in primary school some background in coding, algorithmic thinking and computer principles, teaching them in a fun and age-appropriate way. For secondary school pupils, computer science classes will be introduced in the first three years of secondary education.

Gaby Wagner of the National Employment Agency said around 70% of the new hirings planned for the sector will correspond to job creation trends, with only 30% accounting for replacements. This would constitute the highest number of new hirings since 2002, showing the economy in the Grand Duchy is continuing to create jobs - but that it also requires increasingly high qualifications. This could be a challenge for ADEM.

168 companies participated in the survey, which was conducted for the tenth time.
