Mayor Jos Schummer had proposed that the aldermen step down in unison, after both he and councillor Cindy Barros left the CSV party in June.

Following this, the party "Är Leit" received a majority in the council, although the CSV remained in power with the majority of aldermen.

The division within the local council stemmed from a vote over the proposed Google data centre, in which CSV councillors Cindy Barros and Christian Hoscheid voted against the project and against the party line.

On Tuesday mayor Schummer said respected the decision of both aldermen, and hoped to remain mayor while working together with "Är Leit" to put a new government together.

The whole affair will not have an impact on the data centre project as this has been approved. Google must now provide detailed plans before construction can begin, said Schummer.
