Youth for Climate Luxembourg are amping up the pressure ahead of their next climate strike, due to take place on 20 September during the 'Week for Future' (20 to 27 September).

Youth for Climate Luxembourg have organised two upcoming protests in September, coinciding with the "Week for Future" movement, which will see internationally coordinated strikes and protests take place between 20 and 27 September.

The Youth for Climate Luxembourg strike on 20 September is designed as a continuation of the Fridays for Future marches that began earlier this year. However, the second 'United for Climate Justice' march on 27 September is open to all those who wish to join protesters, with YCL writing: "Whether you are a worker, an employee, a farmer, a student, a pensioner, an employer, a new or long-time activist, a (grand)parent, a (grand)child, …every single person is needed to make lasting change possible!"

The purpose of the Youth for Climate Luxembourg marches is to put pressure on the government to acknowledge the climate crisis as an emergency and act accordingly. Ahead of the march, the group have been promoting their work and criticising Prime Minister Xavier Bettel for inaction.

In a Facebook and Instagram post, the group both lambasted Bettel for taking 13 days to organise a meeting with the protesters and for never arranging a second meeting. The post also lamented that Bettel did not engage with the youths on drastic political changes, but instead invoked a 'climate exchange' project, which they claim was never evaluated. Finally, the group drew attention to a quote purportedly said by Bettel, which translates to :"Climate change is an issue close to my heart, my husband and I have bought a yoghurt machine so we can throw fewer plastic containers away."

Youth for Climate Luxembourg's criticism of Bettel resides in the fact that as prime minister, he has the power to enact change but instead only introduces change in his private life, rather than as political measures.

By raising awareness of this exchange, Youth for Climate endeavour to place more pressure on the government with the two upcoming strikes. In addition to organising protests, Youth for Climate Luxembourg are also holding an 'official clean up day' the day after the first protest.
