Two weeks ago, on 22 August, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice suffered a heart attack in Belgium. Due to his brain not being oxygenated during emergency CPR, the 53-year-old had to be put into an artificial coma.
The same evening he was transferred to Bruges for operation: his veins needed to be cut open.
Félix Braz is currently no longer in a critical condition, but is being looked after at an intensive care unit after another transfer. Doctors say he is in a ‘state of minimal conscience’.
At midday on Friday, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel announced that for the moment, Sam Tanson, the Minister for Culture and Housing, would be temporarily taking over Braz’s duties.
The law states that if a minister is unable to fulfil his duties after 15 days, a different member of parliament must take his place temporarily.
Bettel confirmed that ‘Mr. Braz was, is, and will remain a member of the government’ and reassured the Deputy Prime Minister’s family that they have the government’s full support.
