Where are people still experiencing inequality? Which sectors require further improvements? These were some of the questions posed in the public consultation organised by the Ministry of Equality, with a view to developing a national plan of action. The results were presented on Thursday, confirming that the topic of inequality attracted a lot of interest.

1,777 people completed the questionnaire

1,777 people completed the questionnaire online over a three week period, both residents and cross-border workers. The number of women who responded was more than twice the number of male participants. Minister Taina Bofferding said participants were asked how they viewed the evolution of equality between men and women, stating that 67% of responses said they had seen progress and certain things were better, but there was still a long way to go.

The majority of respondents cited violence and harassment and wage inequality as the main areas to prioritise. In regards to the results of the consultation, it must be noted that there were few differences in the responses when put into age categories, but there are distinct differences in how men and women view inequality.

Different perception of inequality according to gender

74% of women considered equal pay a priority, compared to just 38% of men.

Although equal pay was retained in the law of 2016, there have yet to be complaints made. Concerns regarding transparency of employees and support available to defend people have been noted.

The new action plan will examine different ways to support people to encourage claimants to come forward when experiencing inequality in the workplace. The plan is set to be finalised by the end of the year.
