The public prosecutor's office announced on Friday afternoon that the police officer who shot a motorist in Bonnevoie has been charged with homicide.

On 11 April 2018, the police officer in question shot a driver attempting to avoid a traffic check. In his attempt to flee, the driver made as if to accelerate in the direction of the officers, which forced the officer to shoot.

Consequently, the driver was fatally injured, but drove on until he crashed into a tree on Place Leon XIII in front of the church. In hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

The autopsy of the victim, a 51-year-old man from the Netherlands and based in Germany, confirmed that he died of a gunshot wound. The man had a prior record for a number of infractions against the Highway Code.

The Luxembourgish police officer has been charged with culpable homicide and assault and battery. He has been placed in legal custody and is under the presumption of innocence until the end of the trial.
