By 31 December 2018, the number of residents in Luxembourg City stood at exactly 119,214. That number includes citizens from 168 different countries who have moved to the capital of the Grand Duchy.
The trend suggests both demographic growth within the city and the internationalisation of its demographics. Its population size rising by nearly 3,000, Luxembourg City shows itself as a dynamic city and will certainly breach the symbolic bar of 120,000 within the next year.
Non-citizens have essentially pushed the growth of the city's population, as a net number of 8,752 people have settled from abroad.
In total, 84,159 non-Luxembourgers live in the city, making up 70.59% of its population.
The biggest non-Luxembourgish group in the capital is the French, making up 17.2% of its total population. The French are followed by the Portuguese at 10.3%, then Italians at 7%, and Belgians at 3.8%.
In terms of the population breakdown by neighbourhood, the station neighbourhood is the one with the largest foreign population (84%).
Cents, on the contrary, is the only neighbourhood with a Luxembourgish majority (50.6%).
