UPDATE: Wiltz crashPolice are looking for eye-witness reports from the scene

RTL Today
On 2nd January a man deliberately drove into a group of people, killing his own 2-year-old child.

The police are looking for eye-witness reports from the scene and for people who might have made pictures or filmed the incident with their phones. The contact number is (+352) 4997-6111.

Police officers are especially keen on talking to the woman who was crossing the street behind the perpetrator's car as he was doing a u-turn in Rue Grande Duchesse Charlotte. Her witness statement could prove invaluable to officers.

On Thursday, Diekirch's prosecutor has ordered the pre-trial detention of the man who had crashed his car into a group of people in Wiltz, killing his own 2-year-old son. As expected, the judge also ordered a judicial investigation for manslaughter and murder.

The maximum penalty for these offences is life imprisonment.

An alcohol test performed on the man turned out negative. The influence of alcohol can hence be excluded. According to the press release, the man had previously never been reported for violent acts or threats against other individuals.

One good news: the 2nd child, a 10 months old little girl, was able to leave the hospital. The other three injured, the 24-year-old mother of the injured baby girl, a 47-year-old man and the perpetrator's 42-year-old ex-spouse, remain hospitalized but are allegedly in stable conditions.

As a reminder, the man had crashed his car into a group of people - 3 adults and 2 children - close to the hospital in Wiltz. One child had died in hospital.

Police quickly ruled out the possibility of a terrorist attack, with early information suggesting that the crash may have been an accident. Towards the evening, it was confirmed that the man behind the wheel had deliberately driven into the group of people.

The man was presented to the examining magistrate on Thursday.

What happened?

A man deliberately drove into a group of 5 - including two mothers with strollers, and two children.

It has since transpired that driver was the father of one of the children (a 2-year-old boy), who died in hospital after sustaining severe injuries. Another child was severely injured. All five victims were transported to hospital. Three helicopters from Air Rescue and four ambulances from Wiltz and Troisvierges were at the scene, as were firemen from Wiltz and Goesdorf.

The driver was in a blue car with Luxembourgish licence plates and came from the direction of the hospital. He accelerated shortly before approaching the group rather than slowing down.

Deliberate, but not terrorism

According to an RTL source, the incident was the result of an interpersonal dispute. One of the victims was the driver's ex-partner, and the 47-year-old driver was the father of the 2-year-old child who died. Police also ruled out the influence of alcohol.

Five people, two mothers with strollers and a man, were  injured when a blue car with Luxembourgish licence plates crashed into them. The car was coming from the direction of the hospital when the driver crashed into the group standing on the pavement on the opposite side of the street.

Rue Grande-Duchesse Charlotte was closed for several hours.
