Early May saw the beginning of a new tourist season for the outdoor swimming lakes, with new security measures following last year's tragic deaths.

New staff members, new islands and a dozen new lifebuoys - a number of changes have taken place since last year. Signs have also been put up to remind visitors that the open bodies of water on the site are not monitored, explained Cédric Neu, manager of staff at Remerschen.

He said the site is officially not under surveillance, with visitors expected to take responsibility for themselves. However, staff are vigilant at the small pond, due to the number of children visiting, and will intervene if a child is found alone by the water.

Swimmers are reminded to use armbands and pay attention to their children. Neu clarified that although they could not monitor the entire site, staff make regular rounds by boat to keep an eye on matters.

A total of 15 staff members patrol the area. Every year, there is the issue of algae in the water, which is removed every day, even if it does not pose a risk. The Schengen alderman in charge of the "Baggerweieren", Tom Weber, said the weeds were cut frequently so as not to disturb bathers.

Crowds flock to Remerschen on sunny weekends, with visitor numbers reaching around 7,000. On particularly busy days, they make use of a security company.

The improvements are not just limited to security - this season, visitors will have the opportunity to rent new Stand Up Paddle boards.
