Tom Jungen, mayor of Roeser, held a speech during the ceremony, in which he underlined the importance of nuclear disarmament. It is the 75th anniversary of the attack lead by US forces, who first dropped a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, and three days later on Nagasaki.
A ceremony with educational insights
The Japanese Ambassador to Luxembourg Jiro Okuyama used the occasion to talk about the importance of remembering these events and of committing to nuclear disarmament, the two main missions of such a commemorative event. Even older people, like himself, would tend to forget what happened in the past. In 1982, the mayor of Hiroshima launched the initiative "Mayors for Peace", in which 56 out 102 Luxembourgish municipalities take part. A circle that could be enlarged, as Roeser mayor Jungen noted. He therefore committed to try and strengthen the initiative in the Grand Duchy over the coming weeks in cooperation with his mayoral colleagues from the region.
