Human rightsA vaccine mandate is not the way to go, says Gilbert Pregno

RTL Today
The president of the consultative human rights commission joined our colleagues from RTL Radio for an interview on Thursday morning.

When asked about vaccine sceptics, Pregno noted that fears, accusations, and pressure clearly only increase people’s stubbornness.

In the context of the latest Covid laws, the human rights commission already expressed concerns over the divisive effect and negative implications of making people pay for PCR tests. Members of the commission were also struck by the latest messaging of Prime Minister Bettel and his warning of renewed restrictions.

Pregno explained that there are already enough issues dividing the population of Luxembourg, this should not be added to the list. He thus pleaded that both the government and Chamber of Deputies pay attention to the population.

It is also clear for the human rights commission that a vaccine mandate is not the way to go. Pregno underlined that the jab is the best way out of the pandemic, but that it should not be used as a tool to exert pressure and potentially derail the situation.

Pregno further emphasised that many unvaccinated people are not strictly against the shot, but are simply scared of getting it. He also drew attention to the fact that families in precarious environments tend to worry less about their health.

The commission president expressed concerns over the way in which the public dialogue is evolving and that we need to find a quick way out of the pandemic. Until then, freedom as we know it will remain limited.
