This new nerighbourhood planned to be built on Kirchberg, borders the Grünewald and Kuebebierg nature reserve.
“This is indeed a mega-project. We envision a symbiotic relationship where nature intertwines with infrastructure and architecture, connecting everything with a comprehensive mobility and energy concept. Here, 3,000 housing units will be built, along with the introduction of the tram and the establishment of a new school. This marks the establishment of an entirely new district within the city,” states Yuriko Backes, Minister for Mobility.
The terrain located on the Kirchberg plateau is twice as large as the entire Upper City and is intended to become a residential area. However, it’s important that the surrounding nature is not neglected.
“We are right next to Natura 2000, where it’s imperative not only to respect but also to expand upon what already exists. From the residential area here, direct access will be provided to what will become a large park, similar to the ‘Kinnekswiss’,” says the Mayor of Luxembourg City Lydie Polfer.
Despite living in the city, children should not forget where food products come from, she adds.
“What we’ll introduce here, [something we haven’t had before] is the concept of Urban Farms. This means producing food within the city - food that we require and enjoy on a daily basis. We want children to learn pedagogically about food production and understand where our vegetables and fruits come from.”
3,000 residences are planned to be built on 33 hectares of natural land. The vision is to create an affordable neighborhood for families, says Marc Widong, Director of the Fonds du Kirchberg:
“Prices are indeed a concern. Here, as the Fonds du Kirchberg always does, we designate 30% of the housing as affordable housing through the Ministry of Housing. Additionally, 40% is designated as affordable housing from the Fonds du Kirchberg, with the remaining 30% being market-rate housing. This approach ensures that the first 70% of the units will be sold below market price, which means everyone can find housing they can afford.”
The start date and duration of the project are still unknown.
