A study published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) indicates that internet use has become nearly universal among Luxembourg residents aged 65 to 74.

In 2019, 85% of people in this age group lived in a household with an internet connection. That figure has risen to 94% as of 2024, reflecting an increase of 7% among men and 6% among women.

Not only are more seniors connected, but their daily engagement is high: 79% use the internet one or more times per day. Their primary online activities include sending emails (71%), using online banking services (63%), and seeking information about goods and services (61%).

Many also read news online (61%), search for health-related information (51%), or make calls, including video calls (50%). The study notes a slight gender divide: men are more likely to use email or online banking, while women are proportionally more inclined toward communication services like video calls and instant messaging.

E-commerce is also common, with nearly half of 65–74-year-olds having made an online purchase in the last three months. The top categories were clothing (20%), books (19%), and hotel or holiday bookings (18%).

The adoption of connected devices is rising within this demographic. Smart TVs are now in 42% of their households, compared to 19% who use smartwatches and 16% who own connected cars.
