Electric mobility800 charging stations planned, 475 soon available

Luxembourg is expecting 240,000 electric and hybrid cars on the country's roads by 2030.

Luxembourg's electric mobility plan is taking big leaps, according to ministers Claude Turmes and François Bausch in response to a parliamentary question from LSAP MPs Georiges Engel and Yves Cruchten.

Engel and Cruchten questioned how e-mobility would develop in Luxembourg, and whether the grid would be able to carry the extra load.

Only 2,5% of the 430,000 vehicles on Luxembourg's roads are currently electric or hybrid. In 10 years time, a further 230,000 vehicles will drive on our roads, a figure that is hard to imagine, Turmes and Bausch said.

If 240,000 cars were either hybrid or electric vehicles by 2030, the total electricity usage would be 520 gigawatts per year, which translates to 8% of total grid capacity.

In preparation, 800 charging points are to be installed throughout the Grand Duchy by the end of 2021. Currently there are 345 charging points in the country. The allowances for a further 82 have already been signed, 45 will be completed in due time.

Plans for ultra fast charging points are also on the table.

Residents are asked to not install private charging stations at home to limit strain on the national grid. How many of these already exist, however, is unknown.
