The automobile sector suffered heavy losses due to the Covid-19 crisis in March and April this year.

FEBIAC, the Belgian and Luxembourg Automobile and Cycle Federation, published their analysis of the market this week.

The sector is expected to take some time to recover from the coronavirus crisis, with 64.6% fewer vehicles registered in March/April 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.

From January to the end of June, around 20,800 cars were registered in the Grand Duchy - 32.6% fewer than in 2019. Only 2,000 vans were registered, 26% fewer than the same time last year.

Electric cars, however, are gaining in popularity among Luxembourg drivers, rising from 1.8% to 3.4%.

Hybrid cars are also becoming more popular, making up 11.3% of registered cars.

Although petrol cars still account for a larger market share, diesel vehicles are beginning to stabilise once more after a period of significant decline.

FEBIAC also reported a trend towards car loans rather than outright purchases.
