A stable caught fire in Heiderscheid around 8pm on Thursday, necessitating the intervention of six fire fighter centres. 600 pigs had to be culled after the fire.

Around 40 firefighters from Ettelbruck, Clervaux, Wiltz, Alebësch, Feulen and Grevels were at the scene to extinguish the flames. President of Luxembourg's Veterinary Services Administration Felix Wildschutz explained after the stable fire that 600 pigs had to be culled.

The roof of the stable caught fire around 7.45 pm on Thursday evening. The building was smoke-logged. The veterinary Services Administration was contacted around 10 pm after the fire had been extinguished. It quickly became clear that the pigs had been injured by melted insulation material falling from the roof.

A team was dispatched from a local abattoir around 11pm to end the suffering of the animals in accordance with Luxembourg's animal welfare laws. Around 600 piglets weighing between 30 and 40kg had to be put down.

It took the teams a comparatively long time to arrive at the scene due to the adverse weather conditions.
