Nearly half of all residents in Luxembourg are non-Luxembourgers, according to an end-of-year report by the national statistics agency (STATEC) published on Thursday.

49.3% (or 317,702 people) were born in a different country, but there are regional differences too, such as low immigration numbers in Wahl (21.8%) or Grosbous (23.7%) and impressive shares in Luxembourg City (72.2%), Esch (56.1%) and Larochette (53.1%).

13% of the entire population is from a neighbouring country (Germany, Belgium, France). This share resides primarily around the City and near the bordering regions from the country they’re from.

More than a tenth of the entire population (11.3%) is Portuguese, making it the largest community in the Grand Duchy. Most reside in Esch and in the north-eastern regions of Clervaux, Vianden, Echternach and around Larochette, corresponding to the old steelworks basins and the textile industry.

15.5% of immigrants come from a country outside of the EU, and this group has grown the fastest in the last decade. Top countries are China, Montenegro, India, Cape Verde, Kosovo, Brasil, Russia, Morocco and Tunisia.

On the OECD list, Luxembourg is in second place behind Greece for the number of asylum applications per capita.
