According to a new report from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC), the number of people claiming to have been a victim of physical violence increased by 50% compared to 2013.

Almost a third of people living in Luxembourg have been a victim of physical violence in the last five years, reveals the STATEC report. Half of the population stated to have already experienced psychological violence in their lives, which thus makes it the number one issue in Luxembourg.

Psychological violence can come in various forms, including stalking, moral and sexual harassment, or marital pressure. 17% of people in the poll stated that they have also experienced sexual violence. For women, it was one in five, while every sixth woman has either experienced rape or attempted rape.

In terms of physical violence, the rate of affected people was more or less the same for women as it was for men. In its report, STATEC also found that there is a higher likelihood for people who were born in the Grand Duchy to come forward after experiencing any form of violence.
