2022 was the second hottest year on record in Luxembourg as numerous drought and heatwave records were broken, says Meteolux.
🔥 The second hottest year on record
With an average annual temperature of 11.2°C, 2022 is the second warmest year in the history of the Findel airport weather station since 1947, preceded only by the record year 2020 (11.3°C) and followed by 2018 (11.1°C) and 2014 (10.8 °C). The year 2022 is 1.4°C above the long-term average for the period of 1991 to 2020 (9.8°C).
💧 Too dry a year
With an annual accumulation of 637.2 l/m², the year 2022 is marked by a significant rainfall deficit of 194.1 l/m² compared to the average of the 1991-2020 period (831.3 l/m²), the driest year in history being 1976 with an annual accumulation of only 541.0 l/m². 2022 ranks as the tenth driest year since 1947.
🏆 Records season by season
- The winter of 2021-2022 was very mild with a seasonal average temperature of 3.4°C, 1.5°C above normal. The winter was only moderately sunny with 178.6 hours of sunshine. Only eight days with snow-covered ground were recorded, which is well-below the 1991-2020 reference period. A maximum snow depth of 3 cm was measured on 10 December 2021.
- Spring 2022 was also relatively mild with a seasonal average temperature of 10.3°C. With a monthly average temperature of 15.4°C, May 2022 was the third warmest month of May on record (tied with May 2017). There was also a rainfall deficit of around 50%, particularly in May. Sunshine, however, made history at the time! Spring 2022 was the third sunniest spring on record with 732.7 hours of sunshine. March was the sunniest March on record (218.8 hours).
- The summer of 2022 was the second hottest summer on record with an average seasonal temperature of 20.1°C, 2.2°C above the norm. The maximum daily temperature for the summer of 2022 was 36.3°C, recorded on 19 July that year. Precipitation was at a record low of about 66% (74.6 l/m²), the driest summer since 1947. In terms of sunshine, the summer of 2022 also broke records with 956.2 hours of sunshine and 377 hours of sunshine in July alone.
- Autumn 2022 was also much warmer than the norm with an average temperature of 11.3°C, 1.5°C warmer than normal, making it the third warmest autumn in history. With an average temperature of 12.8°C, October 2022 is the warmest October on record, tied with October 2006. The autumn of 2022 was characterised by a rainfall surplus, with a seasonal total of 267.8 l/m², 25% higher than normal.
