1 January: Salary indexation triggers 2.5% increase in wages, salaries, and pensions.

1 January: Smoke detectors are made mandatory in Luxembourg. All newly-built homes need to be equipped with smoke detectors. A transition period of five years applies for older buildings.

9 January: The new vehicle inspection station opens its doors in Marnach.

31 January: Brexit comes into effect and the UK leaves the EU.

Between February and April: Increase in excise duties on fuel comes into effect. Diesel prices will climb between 3 and 5 cents, petrol will climb between 1 and 3 cents per litre.

29 February: 2020 is a leap year, which means that February will have an additional day.

1 March: Public transport becomes free of charge in Luxembourg.

30 March: Disney's streaming service is coming to Luxembourg, rivalling Netflix.

12 June - 12 July: European Football championship takes place in a number of countries across the continent. The final will be held at Wembley Stadium in London.

24 July - 9 August: Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

15 September: New Luxembourgish spelling rules coming into effect.

20 October: Expo 2020 in Dubai.

3 November: Presidential elections in the US.

31 December: Glyphosate banned in Luxembourg.

What about self-driving cars?

Autonomous cars are becoming a reality in 2020. France hopes to grant licenses to driverless cars over the course of the year while the US is planning on launching the first autonomous taxis in the summer of 2020.
