A record 20,000 people attended this year's COSL Spillfest in Kirchberg, drawn by a new venue and an expanded programme of over 70 sports workshops.

With a new venue and an expanded programme, this year's COSL Spillfest attracted more people than ever before.

Kirchberg was entirely dedicated to sport on Thursday. At the park near the Coque sporting centre, more than 50 sports federations took part in the COSL Spillfest – and with great success. Around 20,000 people attended, setting a new record.

It was the first time the event had been organised at this large venue. For Burkhard Disch, head of sports promotion at the Luxembourg Olympic and Sporting Committee (COSL), this brings many advantages. "We have the option of getting here by tram, and we have all the facilities – indoor […] and the Kirchberg park", he said.

Many sports to discover

More than 70 workshops were on offer, giving visitors an insight into the many sports available in Luxembourg. The aim was to motivate people to get active.

Many children and teenagers took the opportunity to try out new disciplines. "It's really cool to have a look at all the different sports", one young athlete said.

New activities were also on offer, such as a swimming workshop that included diving.

Alongside the sporting activities, the organisers also trialled something new. The well-known stamp system was digitised: participants could record their activities via a personalised QR code.

"This is […] a great opportunity for every participant to connect with the clubs", Disch said. Inclusion was also a high priority.

Huge turnout

The event's success was apparent early on. Just two hours after opening, more than 5,000 registrations had been counted. Long queues in front of the workshops were a clear sign of high interest.

Whether the new venue will become a permanent fixture will be analysed following this edition. However, one thing is already clear: the COSL Spillfest remains a major crowd-puller. Around 700 volunteers were on duty throughout the day.
