Some exciting news coming from the academic sector as Dr Emmanuel Defay, Head of the Nanotechnologies Unit at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), has been granted nearly €2.4 million over the course of five years in order to develop electricity generation studies.
“Right now, most of the heat we generate in the world gets wasted, but it could actually be used to make enough electricity to power all of Europe,” claims Dr Defay. His studies could play a major role in developing electricity production that has the potential to be more efficient than solar panels.
Any industry that generates waste heat could benefits from this technology, especially those with high-quality waste-heat, such as high-temperature processes, like the ones that can be found in steel production.
These grants are offered to Europe’s top researchers and they are extremely difficult to obtain. The Advanced Grant “is amongst the most prestigious and competitive EU funding schemes” according to the ERC, hence this being a testament to Dr Defay’s work.
