
189 people requested international protection in the Grand Duchy in July, according to a press release published by the Directorate of Immigration on Friday morning. To date, there have been 1,256 asylum demands in 2023, compared to 1,115 over the same period in 2022.

This July saw the highest number of asylum seekers in five years. The majority of requests came from Syria (37.9%) and Eritrea (14.3%). Other asylum requests originated from Afghanistan, Venezuela, Turkey and Morocco. In July, requests were submitted by 62 Syrians, 43 Eritreans, 12 Venezuelans and 8 Afghans.
This year, 380 people received refugee status in Luxembourg. 166 people had their request for international protection denied. In July alone, 102 people had their request denied by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Applications increased by 6.3% - specifically 12 additional requests - compared to July 2022; this is the highest number for any July since 2018, when 238 requests were submitted. According to Directorate statistics, 2018 witnessed a particularly high number of asylum requests, reaching 2,204. Nearly 1,000 people were granted refugee status that year.
81 Ukrainians applied for temporary protection in Luxembourg this July, with 582 requests made since the beginning of the year.
