LSAP MP Yves Cruchten submitted a parliamentary question to the Minister of Justice on the number of people evicted from their homes so far this year.

To date, there have been 16 evictions in 2023, according to Minister Sam Tanson’s parliamentary response.

Since 1 January 2023, there has been a law in force designed to prevent people from being evicted from their homes during the winter. Following a formal opposition from the Council of State, tenants cannot be evicted easily, but they must be able to prove to the magistrates court that they have not been able to find other accommodation.

Judicial officers are tasked with drawing tenants’ attention to their rights, Tanson added. There was a total of 16 tenants in the courts in the capital, Esch-sur-Alzette and Diekirch, who have requested the decision be suspended.

When queried by RTL, the Ministry confirmed it was a coincidence that there had been 16 evictions and 16 requests to postpone evictions - the cases did not correspond to the same people.
