In light of recent ATM robberies in Oberpallen, Reisdorf, and Saeul, Sven Clement from the Pirate Party raised a series of questions in Parliament regarding the security of cash machines in Luxembourg. The parliamentary inquiry was addressed by three ministers: interior minister Léon Gloden, finance minister Gilles Roth, and justice minister Elisabeth Margue.
Clement’s questions centred around the number of ATM attacks in recent years, the identification and apprehension of suspects, and the measures being taken to enhance security.
Since 2020, Luxembourg has experienced 15 ATM robberies, including a rise in incidents this year.
A total of 12 perpetrators have been identified since 2020. Some of the perpetrators were arrested in close cooperation with foreign authorities and are serving their sentences abroad. One of the perpetrators, responsible for the crime in Esch-sur-Sûre will soon be extradited to Luxembourg, explains Gloden.
Luxembourg’s police are working closely with neighbouring countries, and international authorities, such as Europol, are also involved in monitoring these crimes.
