The attacks affected ATMs owned by POST Luxembourg, BIL, BGL, Spuerkeess, and Raiffeisen. While some ATMs were reopened by the banks, others remained out of service. The banks do not disclose the amount of money that was stolen.
The reason why there are so many attacks on ATMs in Luxembourg is that there are a lot of them on the territory of the Grand Duchy, specifically 107 for every 100,000 residents. In other countries of the Eurozone, this figure is closer to 64 ATMs per 100,000 people.
This information was shared by Minister of Finance Yuriko Backes and Minister of Internal Security Henri Kox in their reply to a parliamentary question by MPs Fred Keup and Fernand Kartheiser from the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (adr).
The modus operandi is similar to ATM heists abroad. The material damages are usually very high. The culprits are part of gangs and active throughout Europe.
