No state accounts on X, income-based fines…13 new petitions open for signatures

RTL Today
Luxembourg residents once again have the chance to weigh in on a diverse array of issues, as 13 new petitions spanning social media policies, traffic regulations, and cannabis legislation were published on the Chamber of Deputies' website on Friday.

As of Friday, 7 February, 13 new petitions have been published on the Chamber of Deputies’ dedicated website, inviting citizens to add their signatures. The petitions cover a wide range of topics, from social media policies to traffic regulations and cannabis legislation.

One petition calls on the Luxembourg state to close all its accounts on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and to prioritise promoting non-commercial platforms instead. Another petition focuses on supporting families, urging the government to increase the value of child-care service vouchers to better assist parents.

A further proposal takes inspiration from models in Finland and Sweden, advocating for fines and penalties to be adjusted according to an offender’s income. Under this system, higher earners would pay more, ensuring that fines have an equally punitive impact across all income levels.

The ongoing debate over shop opening hours has also found its way into the petitions, with one petitioner demanding a referendum to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, another petition addresses traffic light regulations, proposing that lights remain “amber” for longer periods to improve safety and reduce fines issued by red light speed cameras.

In the realm of cannabis legislation, one petitioner challenges the new law, calling for a return to the previous rules on medicinal cannabis. The petition argues that patients should have the freedom to choose between flowering tops and oil extracts based on their individual needs.
