Over the weekend, a significant crackdown on drink-driving offences saw 13 motorists facing licence withdrawals following alcohol checkpoints conducted by the police in various locations.

Prompted by the public prosecutor’s office, six alcohol checkpoints were strategically placed by the police during the night from Friday to Saturday, leading to extensive checks on numerous motorists.

The first checkpoint occurred on Friday evening along Route d’Arlon in Strassen between 10pm and 11.30pm. Out of the 78 drivers asked to take breathalyser tests, only one tested positive, resulting in a ticket but no licence confiscation.

A subsequent checkpoint on Route de Longwy in Bertrange, conducted between 12.30am and 2am, saw 52 motorists breathalysed, with six found to have exceeded the legal alcohol limit. The police withdrew the licences of two individuals in this case.

Extensive checks were carried out for more than five hours from 8pm to 1.15am on the N10 and N11, covering Born, Echternach, and Grundhof. Out of 567 drivers checked, 11 tested positive for alcohol, leading to the confiscation of two licences.

Another breathalyser test on Rue d’Ettelbruck in Beringen between 10.30pm and 11.30pm on Friday involved 70 drivers, three of whom were over the legal limit. However, their licences were not confiscated.

In Lorentzweiler, between midnight and 1am on Saturday, police officers checked 105 drivers, with seven found to have exceeded the authorised alcohol limit. No licences were withdrawn on the spot, but two drivers faced issues due to the lack of valid technical inspection certificates for their vehicles.

Three additional checks took place in Luxembourg City on Friday night — on Route d’Esch from 11pm to 11.45pm, Place Winston Churchill from 12.45am to 1.30am, and Rue de Neudorf from 2.30am to 3.30am. In total, 139 drivers were checked, with seven testing positive for alcohol and two licences confiscated as a result of these checks.

Additional drink-driving incidents result in further licence withdrawals

On Saturday morning, at approximately 5.20am, a motorist on Route de Remich in Hamm was reported for erratic driving. The driver came to a stop by the carriageway, prompting a police patrol to investigate. The breathalyser test yielded a positive result, leading to the immediate withdrawal of the driver’s licence.

In Luxembourg City, on Rue Sigefroi, a car was halted after accelerating sharply on Montée de Clausen and overtaking a police patrol. The intoxicated driver had their licence confiscated, while two of the three passengers received fines for not wearing seatbelts.

Another incident occurred on Saturday morning on Rue de Luxembourg in Esch-sur-Alzette, where a car collided with a parked vehicle. Despite attempting to drive away, the driver was prevented from doing so by witnesses and subsequently lost their driving licence. Meanwhile, in Luxembourg City on Boulevard Joseph II, two cars collided, with one of the drivers found to be intoxicated, resulting in the withdrawal of their licence. The other driver was taken to the hospital for a check-up.

Saturday evening witnessed a driver zigzagging at inappropriate speeds on the A1 and A6, prompting reports to the police. The individual was finally located on Rue de Kehlen in Mamer, where further attempts to evade the police proved unsuccessful. The driver’s licence was confiscated upon apprehension.

On Sunday morning at around 7am in Hollerich, patrol officers discovered a vehicle with its engine running stopped at a bus stop. Subsequent checks revealed an intoxicated driver, leading to the withdrawal of the driver’s licence. In Merzig on Sunday evening, a near-accident involving a car resulted in the driver’s licence being confiscated after a breathalyser test indicated a significant level of intoxication.
