The Luxembourg national football team player Dan da Mota has been accused of "Abus de faiblesse" (fraudulent abuse of weakness) and was presented to an examining magistrate on Wednesday.
The accusations were confirmed by da Mota's lawyer Roy Reding. Reding holds that his 33-year-old client is innocent and didn't break the law. The accusations against Da Mota were raised by a bank and the examining magistrate agreed that da Mota could be liable for prosecution. An investigation will be launched to determine if da Mota will be charged.
Roy Reding, Mr. da Mota's attorney, also criticised the fact that some details about the accusation surrounding his clients were leaked to the press before he has even been charged with anything. Reding deemed that people inside the justice department might be to blame for the leaks. Reding stressed that it is an investigation, rather than a charge.
In 2018, Dan da Mota was one of the election candidates for the conservative right-wing Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR). In 2017, Dan da Mota changed clubs after more than 9 years going from the F91 Dudelange to the Luxembourg City Racing football club.
