In reaction to a series of serious motorbike crashes, the roads and bridges department is introducing new road markings designed to keep bikers in the middle of their lane.

At the moment, the first of these road markings have been applied to a particularity dangerous stretch of road between Kautenback and Wiltz in the north of the country.

The markings highlight the middle of a lane and are supposed to encourage bikers not to get too close to oncoming traffic, especially in road bends.

The marking process will take until Wednesday. Until that then, the N25 between Wiltz and Kautenbach will be closed to traffic with only buses allowed to drive past the barricades.

Are the markings more dangerous?

Questions were raised about whether the white paint would actually make the road surface more slippery, as is often found at pedestrian crossings. When contacted by RTL Today, Ponts and Chaussées have replied that no, this is a special high-traction paint devised by the Austrians who first came up with this approach.
