UN Secretary-General António Guterres warns that global military spending vastly outweighs development aid and urges the world to reset its priorities toward peace, poverty reduction, and climate action in 2026.

In his New Year address, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that the world is at a decisive turning point and insisted that far more effort must go into promoting peace and tackling climate change.

He noted that today’s global landscape is marked by instability, violence, polarisation, and persistent breaches of international law. To make the world safer, he argued, resources should be directed toward reducing poverty rather than fuelling conflict.

Guterres stated that global military expenditure has now reached 2.7 trillion dollars: thirteen times the total amount dedicated to development aid.

The UN Secretary-General called on the international community to reassess its priorities for the new year and appealed for greater humanity, fairness, and peace worldwide.
