Responding to reader questions submitted for International Fact-Checking Day, RTL investigates one of Luxembourg's most persistent cultural statistics: the claim that the Schueberfouer consistently draws two million visitors each year.

As part of International Fact-Checking Day, our colleagues from RTL.lu invited readers to submit claims for verification. Among the numerous suggestions, the team prioritised topics related to Luxembourg – including one question about the Schueberfouer:

"Are there really two million visitors annually, regardless of the fair’s duration?!"

Who releases these figures?

To verify the cited figure, RTL reached out to the police and the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS), both of which are actively involved in the Schueberfouer every year. The Luxembourg police stated that while they publish such figures for various events across the country, this mostly applies to major demonstrations for which they receive attendance estimates from the organisers or the local authorities ahead of the event. According to the police, this is not the case for the Schueberfouer. Similarly, the CGDIS stated they do not track attendance and redirected enquiries to the municipality of Luxembourg City.

The Luxembourg Confederation, which represents the interests of the fairground operators, clarified that attendance metrics fall outside their responsibilities and also referred RTL to the capital's local authority.

The municipality acknowledged the request and pledged to consult the relevant department. However, as of 10am on 2 April 2025, no response had been provided.

Where does the 2-million figure even come from?

The claim of "two million visitors" appears consistently across multiple sources referencing the Schueberfouer. This figure features prominently on the Grand Duchy's official portal "Luxembourg.lu", in numerous press articles (here, here, here, and here), and has been cited on Wikipedia as a projection for the 2018 edition of the fair. The German and French versions of Wikipedia describe this as an "average" figure, while media reports have frequently attributed it to "organiser estimates" over the years.

Conclusion: A question that remains to be answered!

Despite its widespread use, the origin of this statistic remains unclear. Sources familiar with the event's operations on Glacis confirm the two-million figure circulates as an organiser estimate. However, without official confirmation or methodology from Luxembourg City's municipal authorities, the accuracy of this number cannot be verified.

RTL will update this report should the municipality provide clarification following this publication.
