Nearly 6% of German residents aged between 16 and 74 have never used the Internet, according to a 2022 survey on online behaviours.
According to a survey conducted by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden last year, around 3.4 million people in Germany say they have never been on the Internet.
The survey, which monitored online behaviour and communication, found that 17% of people aged between 65 and 74 years old had never surfed the web. The rate dropped to 2% for people under the age of 45. Overall, some 6% of Germans aged between 16 and 74 live offline, according to the survey results.
In the European Union, around 7% of the whole population do not use the Internet, although the rate varies wildly from country to country. In Greece and Portugal, the number of people living offline represents 14% of the population; in Scandinavia and Ireland, in contrast, the rate is less than 4%.
In 2022, around a third of the world's population did not have access to the Internet, meaning around 2.7 billion people worldwide have never been online.
