Telugu harvest traditions will take centre stage in Differdange over the second weekend of January, with organisers inviting residents to join two events focused on renewal, gratitude and community.

Two community celebrations highlighting Telugu harvest traditions are taking place in Differdange this month, with a Bhogi gathering on Friday 9 January and a Sankranthi event on Sunday 11 January.

The first event, Bhogi Celebrations, runs from 5pm to 8pm at GrillPlaz. Organisers say a small, symbolic Bhogi Mantalu bonfire will be lit outdoors under moonlight, reflecting the traditional start to the four-day harvest period observed mainly by Telugu communities in India. The fire is described as fully controlled and intended as a cultural symbol of letting go of old habits and welcoming renewal, prosperity and positive beginnings. Families and participants will be invited to gather around the bonfire to share the festive atmosphere.

A second event, Sankranthi Celebrations, follows on Sunday 11 January, from 11am to 4pm, at Av. Parc des Sports. The programme includes a South Indian traditional lunch buffet as a central highlight.

Sankranthi is widely celebrated as a harvest festival and a moment of thanksgiving for nature, farmers and cattle, reflecting the deep agricultural roots of Telugu culture. It is also linked to the sun’s transition into Capricorn, traditionally seen as the start of longer days and an auspicious period. Celebrations often focus on family traditions, food, cultural activities and seasonal decorations.

Organisers say the two events are intended both to bring the Telugu community together and to share elements of South Indian culture with a wider audience in Luxembourg.
