Welcome to our first monthly guide to events happening in Luxembourg. From markets to festivals, classical music to the latest gigs, restaurant openings to kids' entertainments, you will find it all here.

1 April – Emaischen Festival - Luxembourg city - MARKETSEvery year on Easter Monday potters from all around the country come to the capital city to sell their traditional "Péckvillecher" for the "Emaischen". Essentially the Péckvillecher are whistles in the form of a bird made out of ceramic, which when blown make a sound similar to the whistle of a cuckoo. Easter Monday 08:00-17:00 in Vielle Ville.

1 April – Swing Social Dance – Rotondes - DANCE

Put on your dancing shoes and give a Swing Dance class a whirl. A beginner taster class is open to anyone interested in learning more about swing dancing at the Rotondes from 19:30-20:30. Free of charge. 

2 April - International Children’s Book Day - BOOKS

It’s International Children’s Book Day, the birthday of Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. So why not take your little bookworms to one of Luxembourg’s multilingual libraries. From the Cité Bibliothèque in the city to ‘Il etait une fois’, a multilingual library for children up to 10-years-old, to the beautiful National Library in Kirchberg (which incidentally has a small kids' corner and nice café). 2 April - Simple Minds - Rockhal - MUSIC

As part of the Global Tour 2024, the iconic Scottish rock band Simple Minds is in Luxembourg for one night only. Last tickets still available at time of writing.

3 April – Tour in English – Mudam - ART

Take a free guided evening tour of the exhibitions at the Mudam, from Sin Wai Kin’s "Portraits", Lawrence Abut Hamdan’s "Air Conditioning" to Agnieszka Kurant’s solo exhibition.

5-7 April – Make it Brass Festival – Parc Hosingen - MUSIC

For fans of all things brass, there are 3 concerts, featuring stars such as the American jazz trumpeter Wayne Bergeron (5.4), award-winning trumpet player Sergei Nakariakov (6.4) and the Nympheas Trombone quartet (7.4) as well as master classes.

6 April - Antique and Flea Market - Luxembourg City - MARKETS

Bargain hunters and visitors can peruse and acquire curios, collector’s items and treasures at the antique and flea market, held on Place d’Armes twice a month.

6 April – A secret market for my “quest” – Casino Luxembourg - ART

Something for the little ones, a workshop for children aged 6-12. The exhibition Forced Amnesia transports you into a video game world, where you meet strange creatures and kids can create their own adventure map in an unknown world.

6 April - Organ concert – Notre Dame cathedral - MUSIC

Take some time out from Saturday shopping and enjoy the weekly organ concert in the Notre Dame cathedral. Sujee Ha plays the Westenfelder organ. Entrance is free but donations are welcome.

10 April - ABBA Gold – The Concert Show – Echternach Trifolion - MUSIC

Enjoy a night of glam pop and catchy tunes as ABBA Gold – The Concert Show recreates the 70s with a musical revival of the iconic band. From the original costumes to the Swedish accent of the singers - every little detail is authentically ABBA.

10 April – Opera GO – Luxembourg City - MUSIC/VR

Opera GO is an operatic scavenger hunt which takes the audience on a journey through Luxembourg City to playfully discover the diversity of opera through augmented reality. Shows start at De Gudde Wellen. Bring your smartphone and your best pair of earphones. Tickets are 20 euros.

11 April - NT Live - Frankenstein - Cine Utopia - THEATRE

Another chance to see Danny Boyle's interpretation of Mary Shelley's classic Frankenstein, performed by London's National Theatre in 2011. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller.

12 April - Hollow Coves - Opderschmelz Dudelange - MUSIC

Hollow Coves
is the indie-folk band from the Gold Coast, Australia. Matt Cairns and Ryan Henderson are equal parts songwriters and vocalists, alternating lead roles. They have just released a new album 'Nothing to Lose'. Check out The Mixtape host Alice Monnat's interview with Hollow Coves right here.

12 April – Jack Holmes – Light in the Dark – Carlitos - COMEDY

If you need a laugh, check out Jack Holmes, a British stand-up comedian, known for his high-energy performances. His new touring show “Light in the Dark” is an exploration of the funniest things about the hardest parts of our lives. Carlitos Comedy Club, 21:00 onwards.

13 April - Concert de Printemps – Mersch - MUSIC

Get ready for an evening with the Orchester National des Jeunes du Luxembourg, conducted by Pit Brosius. The concert opens with Johannes Brahms's Violin Concerto in D major, featuring Antje Weithaas, followed by Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 6 in D major, known as Le matin, and the overture of Rossini’s opera L’Italiana  in Algeri.

13-14 April LuxCon 2024 - Forum Geeseknäppchen - MEET

Fans of science fiction, fantasy and horror can head down to the 11th edition of LuxCon, organised by the Luxembourg Science Fiction and Fantasy Society. Cosplay, international guests, fun quizzes, karaoke and exhibitions should keep fans busy over the weekend.

13-14 April - Antiques and Brocante Fair – LuxExpo - MARKETS

Don’t miss Luxembourg’s biggest antiques and second-hand goods fair. Nearly 80 international and national exhibitors will be offering items from antiques, postcards, silverware, jewellery to old books.

14 April – Python Beginners Course in English – PwC Academy - KIDS

18-21 April - Contemporary Art Fair - LuxExpo - ART

If contemporary art is your thing, head to LuxExpo for this 7th Luxembourg edition of the Contemporary Art Fair. Over 80 galleries from Luxembourg, Europe and beyond will show over 3000 works of art for sale (sculptures, paintings, photographs...).

19 April - Eurovision Preview Night - Bissen - MUSIC

Enjoy a spectacular Eurovision Preview Night, featuring finalists of the Luxembourg Song Contest 2024. Entrance is free but money for drinks and snacks will go to LUkraine. Starts at 19:00 at Hal Frounert, 10 Rue de la Laiterie, Bissen

19 April - Wayne Marshall: Jazz & the City - Philharmonie - MUSIC

A fusion of jazz and classical music. Under the leadership of Wayne Marshall, conductor and pianist, immerse yourself in the beating heart of New York with Duke Ellington's Harlem, discover charming Parisian streets in George Gershwin's An American in Paris, and thrill to the energy of modern urban life in Jean-Francois Zygel's La Ville.

20 April - Harry Potter Night - Kinepolis - CINEMA

Yes, it's been 20 years since Harry, Ron and Hermione started their third year at Hogwarts. To celebrate, Kinepolis are organising a 15-minute quiz on all things Harry Potter followed by a one-off big screen showing of "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban".

21 April - Glacismaart - Luxembourg - MARKETS

The monthly Glacismaart is back. Taking place every 3rd Sunday of the month, it's an unmissable meeting place for Sunday walkers, looking for fruits and vegetables and culinary delicacies, flowers and plants.

23 April - Eun-Me Ahn - Grand Theatre - DANCE

Eun-Me Ahn returns with Koshigi Monologue, based on interviews with older women about their first sexual experiences in post-war Korea. Nine dancers embody the testimonies of ignorance, social pressure, arranged marriage, violence and their resignation in the absence of a way out.

24 April - Swan Lake - Cine Utopia - CINEMA/DANCE

Cine Utopia are showing a live screening of the Royal Ballet's performance of the classic romantic ballet Swan Lake.

25 April - The Jesus and Mary Chain - den Atelier - MUSIC

Jesus and Mary chain

40 years after their first single, the Jesus and Mary Chain embark on a major 2024 European tour.  The duo - brothers Jim and William Reid have released a new album 'Glasgow Eyes' and single 'jamcod' in March. 

26 April – Charlie Chaplin’s “City Lights” – Philharmonie - CINEMA/MUSIC

Watch Charlie Chaplin’s classic 1931 silent romantic comedy film City Lights. The score, composed by Chaplin himself, will be performed live by the Luxembourg Philharmonic.

26 April - Foreigners "Black Lights EP Release Party" - Rotondes - MUSIC

Head to the Rotondes to enjoy the Electronic House and Dark Pop Trio "Foreigners". Doors open at 20:00. Our very own DB3 had an interview with the band here.

27 April - Metal Battle (Temple of Metal) - Rockhal - MUSIC

Six local metal bands will be battling it out for a spot to play at the prestigious Wacken Open Air in August. Be sure to check out our weekly Rock/Metal/Anything goes show LOUDER here.

27 April – Superimposition – Cercle Cite - ART/MUSIC

Five performers from Italy will communicate through gesture and mime the work of "Superimposition" – an exploration of the concept of earworms. The work is presented as a fashion show, in which the performers and audience become a single body on stage. Organised by Cercle Cite with the support of the Italian Embassy. 30 April – Priscilla Morris lecture – City Library - BOOKS

Author Priscilla Morris will read from her book “Black Butterflies”, set during the siege of Sarajevo. She will take questions at this author reading at the Auditorium Henri Beck, 2 Rue Genistre, Luxembourg at 18:30. No charge but reservation is essential on bibliotheque@vdl.lu.
